When your furnace makes noises that seem to get louder and louder, a common source is a cracked or partially broken belt that is still functioning but may completely break at any time. Whining sounds may indicate a problem with the ignition.

If you notice that you need to increase the thermostat setting, the problem may be the thermostat itself, a leak in the ducts or the furnace.

If your furnace is 15 years old or more, consider replacing it. The life expectancy of a furnaces is between 15 and 20 years.
